Discoloration Of '86 Mint Proof American Silver Eagle

I bought a 86 Mint-Proof American Silver Eagle. I noticed that the edge of the coin shows some slight brownish/yellowish discoloration....is that what's called "toning"? Do proof coins even "tone"?

Silver in an ugly cast bar or mirror finished proof coin is still silver bullion...silver tarnishes. The toned coloring depending on it's appearance can be an asset. Many collectors prefer a natural mellow yellow/pink/copper/blue/bronze "toned" appearance.

If it's gotten ugly I'd give it a baking soda/salt/boiling water on aluminum foil treatment.

For gold, red spots may appear too even on those 9999 fine gold due to that tiny little bit of copper on the coin surface which oxidise to produce red spots.
